Tbilisi,
Georgia
June 26 - July 2, 2021
At the crossroads of Europe and Asia, the Republic of Georgia is a vibrant mix of East and West unlike any place else in the world. It is the fabled land of the Golden Fleece from Greek mythology and was a major stop along the famed Silk Road connecting medieval European traders to China. More recently, it was part of the Soviet Union and even the birthplace of Stalin, before gaining independence in the 1990s. The capital of Tbilisi is an exotic mix of all of these influences. Old meets new. Tradition meets modernization. Moreover, there's an amazing culinary and wine scene, dramatic mountain terrain, and millennia of history that make this a stop any traveler will love!
Day 1: Welcome
Today you arrive in Tbilisi, the capital of the Republic of Georgia. After settling into your hotel, we'll meet in the evening for a happy hour introduction to some Georgian food and wine as we discuss the week ahead.
Day 2: Old town
This morning, we meet our guide for a walking tour of Tbilisi's old town. We'll explore the ancient origins of this vibrant capital, learn about history and traditions of the Georgian people, and take in the eclectic architecture of a city that straddles Eastern and Western traditions. The afternoon is free for you to do explore the city on your own.
Day 3: The Fortress & Beyond
This morning, we'll again meet our private guide and ride the cable car to the Narikala Fortress for bird's eye views over this dramatic city. We'll learn about Georgia's countless invasions and why this corner of the world was so often fought over. We'll also visit the Mother of Georgia statue and take a refreshing break from the sun in the Botanical Gardens. The rest of the day is yours to use as you wish.
Day 4: Wine Country
They've been making wine in Georgia for over 8,000 years - longer than any other place on earth. Today, we're taking a private tour to the Khakheti Region east of Tbilisi, which is the heart of Georgia's wine industry. Along the way, we'll stop and learn about traditional bread-making culture and really get our hands into it. Then we'll, visit the holiest shrine in Georgia before indulging on a traditional Georgian feast. After lunch, we visit two of the region's best wineries and taste some amazing red, white, and amber wines. This is a full-day excursion, returning to Tbilisi for the evening.
Day 5: The High Caucasus
The majestic mountains that make up much of Georgia's northern half are in our sights today. We'll meet our driver early in the morning and head out on a winding mountain route that runs through some of the most stunning mountain vistas anywhere in the world. Along the way, we'll explore the ruins of a castle complex and be awed by the dramatic setting of the Georgia-Russian Peace Monument set on the edge of the mountaintop. The climax of the day is the remote Gergeti Chruch perched on a mountaintop high above the town of Stepansminda, just 10 miles from the Russian boarder. We'll also stop in the nearby village of Sno, to explore giant stone carvings. Along along the way, our private group will have the flexibility to stop whenever the scenery compels us. The day will end back in Tbilisi at sundown. Lunch at a traditional Georgian restaurant is included.
Day 6: The Day is Yours
Having had several days of introduction to the city of Tbilisi, followed by two full days of excursions into the countryside, today is yours to do with as you wish. Maybe it's a day of rest and relaxation where you sleep in before taking advantage of one of Tbilisi's thermal baths. Perhaps your travel explorer is still raring to go and you'd like to visit the monumental Stonehenge-like Chronicles of Georgia overlooking the Tbilisi Sea. You may choose to take the funicular up to the Soviet-era amusement park perched high above the city, explore the "new" city's belle epoch architecture or vibrant flea markets. As always, David and Tim are able to help you organize any activities that spark your interest. This evening, we'll meet for a farewell toast at the hotel and prepare for the next day's departures.
Day 7: Farewell, Georgia
This is your final morning to get out and take some last-minute pictures and sample the fresh fruits and juices always on sale around the city. The morning is yours before you need to transfer to the airport for your flight home. Those leaving later in the day are able to leave bags with the hotel after checkout, so they can continue to explore this vibrant city.
